On Boosting Your Creativity

Are you one of those folks who say “I’m just not creative”? Well here are a few ways that help prove that comment wrong. We all get stuck from time to time and have creativity block so follow these guidelines and overcome the obstacles that we might put before ourselves.

• Have a creativity journal. Whatever project you are working on have a notebook or journal that you put random ideas down. Anytime night or day you can jot a quick thought down and it’s always there to go to for additional support and ideas.

• Get okay with mistakes and messes. Growing up we were told we had to follow rules and get things right. We had to color within the lines! But to be creative we have to give ourselves permission to make mistakes and messes. We need to shift our everyday mind and get “outside the box” as they say! Sometimes you might make multiple errors before you ever come across the right idea. So be okay with wrong... until you get it right!

• There is no good time to be creative. Creativity can come at any time so be ready for it. Carve out time in the middle of the day but also be prepared for an idea that just happens first thing in the morning or at night. Be spontaneous with your reaction to creativity.

• Being creative is risky business! To be a creative person you have to embrace some risks and the anxiety that comes with it. The idea of the creative process is to move beyond the norm. So try the unexpected. Do the unusual. Move out of the norm and try multiple things until the right one comes along.

Everyday builds your resume and with each experience we become more confident, efficient and valuable to our company.
